About the project
Camouflage by Yelyzaveta Blyumska
In the work in progress, Blyumska examines how the industrial project influenced the city’s identity and what was lost in the process. Working with the body, the image of disguise, and the urban landscape, the artist raises questions of collective memory, forgetting, violence, and adaptation. At the centre are reflections on the female body as a field of struggle, as well as reflections on the boundaries between protection, self-preservation, and postponed catastrophe.
Camouflage is an attempt to restore visibility to what was suppressed by the industrial project. The work speaks of the city as a space of tension between memory and forgetting.
“In the work in progress Camouflage, I ask about the forgetting (remembering) that we, here in the city, choose now? Will repressed memory sprout like new shoots at the bottom of the Dnipro riverbed, freed from the industrial Kakhovka Sea? I reflect on the female body, how it becomes a weapon, but who made us like this? Can we single out the Other, the one who armed us? Maybe we tried to hide, to merge with the surrounding space, as if to protect ourselves and others, but in reality, we only postponed the moment of the explosion?” says the artist.
About the author

Yelyzaveta Blyumska was born and raised in Zaporizhzhia. She studied at the Faculty of Cybernetics and works with arts and psychology. In her work, she strives for anti-disciplinarity — practices of cognition that reject the form and content of academic canons and attempt to occupy the space of the unrecognized. In the artistic practice, Blyumska focuses on the themes of memory and power in relation to urban spaces.
